Introducing Fran Tarr: Founder and Director of Breaking Walls

The Rai Report shares successful humanitarian efforts operated by women and/or for women and girls to provide advocacy for their campaigns and activate more women to participate in creating solutions.

Breaking Walls is a non-profit program providing activism and youth empowerment using creative writing and theatrical performance to build global peace and acceptance. Since 2010, Fran has traveled with her program's artists and ambassadors to the following places to help more youth discover their voice to act as peacemakers and leaders:

More about Fran Tarr...

Breaking Walls Founder/Director, Fran Tarr, is a renowned Arts Educator and artist. For 14 years she was the Education Director for the Women’s Project (WP) and has been Education Coordinator at the prestigious Atlantic Theater Company since 1995. Under her direction the WP program grew from two schools in 1995 to 80 schools by 2008; the Atlantic’s Arts Education programs continue to expand each school year. Starting in 2006, she has volunteered to lead playwriting/performance workshops in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Gbarnga City, Liberia. In 2008, Fran created Fran Tarr Productions LLC dedicated to “giving voice to teens surviving chaos and conflict.” Her first documentary bethlehem to brooklyn: breaking the surface (2008) was an Official Selection at the 2010 Hoboken International Film Festival. Her award-winning second documentary project (2010) brooklyn bridges- to bethlehem & back follows three inner-city Brooklyn teens who travel to meet with their peers in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Using words to combat and describe their daily struggles, they discovered how a grassroots movement can empower the lives of children living in chaos and conflict. brooklyn bridges positive response led Fran to create Breaking Walls - a creative activism writing/performance program. Fran is a Professional Developer for the New York City Board of Education. In 2013, The Creative Visions Foundation selected Fran as one of their Creative Activists. She is currently partnering with the Coalition for Global Citizenship 2030 and the National Peace Academy to co-sponsor the first United States Youth Rising Leadership Forum on three university sites simultaneously from June 24th to 30th, 2018.
