Yes, it's Black History Month and we are celebrating our favorite ladies!
We all learned that women ran the world a long time ago, then Beyoncé reminded us in 2011. We have compiled a list of ten amazing black women who have already made history and continue to inspire The Rai Report team on a daily basis. You probably know everyone included but in case you don't, we have included their Instagram handles for you to do your research.
Michelle Obama, first African American and Most Educated First lady of The United States of America. @michelleobama
Aretha Franklin is the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Oprah Winfrey, first black female host of a nationally syndicated daily talk show with the premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Elaine Welteroth is the youngest person in Condé Nast history to become editor.
Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee is a physician, Diana Ross' sister, and the first African American woman to become a medical school dean.
Ava DuVernay is a Film Director. In 2012, she became the first Black woman to be named Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival. She is the first Black woman to direct a film with a budget over $100 million.
THIS MONTH'S MOOD
A Book to Inspire Your Wildest Ideas and Dreams...Trust Us on This One
We loved reading The Power of Onlyness: Make Your Wild Ideas Mighty Enough to Dent the World by Nilofer Merchant and highly recommend this book to EVERYONE. Nilofer is changing the ideas of leadership, team building, business as we have known it previously, and bravery. She tells of her experiences finding her onlyness and then shares other inspiring stories to paint a vivid picture of how important onlyness is. This is definitely going on our list of books to read again! Here are a few of our favorite quotes:
"Age is not a limiting factor-neither is youth."
Don't allow yourself to give up on yourself or hold yourself back because of your age. There is so much possibility for greatness in you!
"Don't just be you, do you."
Whatever you are or want to be, DO IT. That is the truest way to be authentic.
"...don't give a damn what others think."
"'Fear of what other people think is the single most paralyzing dynamic in business and in life. You will never own the future if you care what other people think.' That is not to say that fear doesn't often serve a useful purpose."
This book lights a new fire in you with every page. It's on our list of favorite books, for sure! Pick it up anywhere books are sold. Thank you, Nilofer Merchant. @nilofer
